                                                                May 24, 1974 –  September 3, 2006

Master Sergeant Joseph A. Longobardo of the 109th Security Forces Squadron died September 3, 2006. MSgt
Longobardo died in the Line of Duty while serving as a New York State Police Mobile Response Team member. As an
MRT member (the equivalent of SWAT) Trooper Longobardo was participating in the manhunt for fugitive Ralph
“Bucky” Phillips, wanted for the attempted murder of another New York State Trooper just two months prior. MSgt
Longobardo was shot on August 31, 2006, having been ambushed by the man the State Police believe to be Ralph
Phillips. Trooper Longobardo and Trooper Donald Baker Jr. were both fired upon with a high powered rifle. Trooper
Baker sustained a gunshot wound in the back that penetrated his bullet proof vest and exited via his stomach; he is still
in critical condition. Joe sustained a wound to the femoral artery. Joe succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, 3 Sep 06.
MSgt Longobardo served in the U. S. Marine Corp from September 1992 through January 1997.   Joe enlisted in the
New York Air National Guard in July 1997 as a member of the 109th Airlift Wing Security Forces Squadron. On
October 3, 2001 he was Partially Mobilized into Federal Active Duty. He deployed to various locations to include
Andrews Air Force Base, Oman and NEADS. MSgt Longobardo is RAVEN 1188. Since Feb 2004 he performed various
missions, his last mission having ended August 26, 2006.
MSgt Longobardo is survived by his wife Teri, his 13-month old son Louis, his mother Gayle and father Anthony
Longobardo and his sister Dawn.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family members, friends and colleagues in this time of sorrow. In response to
numerous public inquiries, the New York State Trooper Foundation has established a fund citizens may forward
donations. Two funds have been set up in response to the August 31, 2006 shootings of Troopers Donald H. Baker Jr.
and Trooper Joseph A. Longobardo.
The Trooper Joseph A. Longobardo Memorial Fund is to benefit Joe’s surviving wife, Teri and their son, Louis. Checks
should be made payable to:   The “NYS Trooper Foundation –  Trooper Joseph A. Longobardo Fund” at 3 Airport
